America's Promise Alliance names Prince William County one of the 100 Best Communities for Young People, cites Beat the Odds

What do Colin Powell's 100 Best Communities for Young People and the PWC Bar Foundation have in common?
Maybe more than we ever thought.
In 1997 General Colin Powell founded an organization called "America's Promise Alliance" which has become the nation's largest partnership dedicated to improving the lives of young people, especially at-risk youth, in the US. Each year America's Promise identifies the 100 best communities across the United States for young people to live in with a focus on programs for at-risk youth. Last month the 2011 winners of the 100 Best Communities were announced and Prince William County was among that prestigious list. In announcing Prince William County as one of the 2011 winners, America's Promise Alliance's website (www.americaspromise.org) first and foremost featured, of all things, the Bar's annual Beat the Odds scholarship program, providing a link from the America's Promise website to the PWC Bar Foundation's website and pointing out that since its inception our Beat the Odds program has provided more than $100,000 to support youth who face adversity in our community.
The Bar's annual Beat the Odds scholarship program has not only made a difference in the lives of the young people who have received scholarships over the past 10 years, it has now also served to cause our county to stand out amongst other communities in the United States. Prince William County has received national recognition as one of the 100 Best Communities at least in part, because of the work our Bar does through those programs funded by our Bar Foundation.
